History of Market Street Cambridge

Market Square, Cambridge. Bells, Brawls and a Thousand Years of Trading

Category:

Right in the centre of Cambridge sits Market Square. Busy, noisy, and often full of people trying to decide between street food or a quick coffee. It feels modern. It isn’t.

This patch of ground has been in constant use for trade for nearly a thousand years. Long before tourists, bicycles and overpriced oat lattes, this was where locals came to buy, sell, argue and occasionally throw a punch.

The Market That Refused to Move

Cambridge Market is one of the oldest continuously running markets in England. It dates back to at least the 12th century, when the town was granted a royal charter to hold regular markets and fairs.

Back then, it was less artisan pastries and more livestock, fish, grain and the general smell of medieval life. Traders shouted over each other, deals were done in a hurry, and standards of hygiene were… flexible.

Not much has changed on the shouting front.

The market has survived fires, plagues, reforms and endless attempts to tidy it up. It’s still here, still slightly chaotic, and still at the heart of the city.

The Bells Everyone Knows (Even If They Don’t Know Why)

Look up from the market stalls and you’ll spot Great St Mary’s Church. It’s not just another historic building. It’s home to what are often claimed to be the most famous bell chimes in the world.

If the tune sounds familiar, that’s because it is. The Cambridge Quarters are used in clocks across the globe, most famously by Big Ben in London.

So yes, those chimes you hear echoing across the square have travelled a fair bit further than the average market trader.

Every quarter hour, they ring out over the square. A polite reminder of the time, or an interruption depending on how your conversation is going.

Town vs Gown. When Shopping Turned Into a Scrap

Market Square hasn’t always been this friendly.

For centuries, Cambridge had a bit of a problem. The “Town” (local residents) and the “Gown” (university students and scholars) did not always get along.

This square, right between both worlds, became the perfect place for tensions to boil over.

Arguments over prices, behaviour, or just general dislike could quickly turn into full-scale brawls. Students in robes facing off against townspeople with whatever they had to hand. Not exactly the genteel image Cambridge likes to project.

Some of these clashes got serious. Property damage, injuries, and the occasional need for actual authority to step in and calm things down.

So next time you’re weaving through the market stalls, just remember. You’re walking through a place that has seen centuries of trade, conflict and the odd academic getting punched.

Still the Heart of the City

Today, Market Square is a little more civilised. You’re more likely to find street food queues than fistfights, and the loudest noise is usually the bells rather than a shouting match.

But the energy hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still the meeting point, the crossroads, the place where Cambridge gathers.

If you want to understand the city properly, you start here.

See It for Yourself

Market Square is just one stop on our walking tours of Cambridge, where the stories are a bit darker, a bit stranger, and a lot more entertaining than your average history lesson.

Come and see what else the city has been hiding in plain sight!
