Terrible Tours Has Landed in Brighton – New Walking Tours for 2026

Category:

We’re properly chuffed to announce that Terrible Tours is expanding to Brighton. After charming (and mildly terrifying) visitors in Cambridge, Norwich, and Oxford, we’re packing our bags and heading south to the seaside. Brighton has always had a reputation for being a bit rough around the edges, which suits us perfectly. Think Saxon settlers, flamboyant Regency elites, indulgent royals, and more than a few rough‑edged sailors and smugglers. They’ve all left their mark here, long before the first weekend reveller rolled in thinking they owned the seafront. We’re bringing our signature blend of history with a twist – funny, grisly, and odd tales delivered without a single footnote. And yes, we’ll be running two distinct tours: a daytime history walk we’ve called Barmy Brighton, and a night‑time ghost walk we’ve called Baleful Brighton. Both are coming in Spring 2026, and both are guaranteed to be just the right side of terrible.

A Brief History of Brighton – And Why We Had to Come Here

Brighton didn’t become a fashionable resort by accident. It was once a sleepy fishing village, but then Dr Richard Russell started prescribing seawater cures in the 18th century, and suddenly everyone who was anyone wanted to dip their toes in the English Channel. The Prince Regent (later George IV) built the Royal Pavilion – a ridiculous, onion‑domed fantasy palace that still makes architects wince and tourists smile. But underneath all that Regency glamour, Brighton has always had a dark underbelly. Smugglers used the network of tunnels under the Lanes to move contraband. The old town was crammed with alehouses, brothels, and gambling dens. And the sea itself has claimed countless souls – sailors, wreckers, and the occasional unlucky swimmer. We’re going to dig up all the best stories: the scandals, the hauntings, the grisly accidents, and the moments that made Brighton the gloriously strange place it is today. And we’re going to do it without once mentioning the Gothic arches of the Pavilion – well, maybe once.

Barmy Brighton – A Daytime History Walk That Won’t Bore Your Socks Off

Our Barmy Brighton tour is the perfect introduction to the city’s past for anyone who finds standard walking tours about as exciting as watching paint dry. We’ll take you through the Lanes, past the seafront, and into the hidden corners where the real history happened. Expect tales of the Prince Regent’s extravagant parties, the ingenious smugglers who evaded customs officers, and the ordinary people who somehow survived the cholera outbreaks. We’ll point out the buildings that look innocent but have seen it all. And we’ll throw in plenty of dark humour – because if you can’t laugh about a plague pit, when can you? Barmy Brighton runs for about 90 minutes and is suitable for families with older children, school groups, and anyone who doesn’t take their history too seriously. You can book your spot on our tours page when tickets go on sale.

Baleful Brighton – A Ghost Walk to Chill Your Bones

When the sun goes down, Brighton takes on a different character. The wind whips off the Channel, the shadows in the Lanes grow deep, and the ghosts come out to play. Our Baleful Brighton ghost walk is designed for those who like their history with a side of proper fear. We’ll lead you through the most haunted spots in town – from the cellars where smugglers hid their loot to the alleys where sailors were press‑ganged into the navy. There are tales of a headless woman, a phantom coach, and a ghastly curse that still lingers near the Old Steine. And yes, we have it on good authority that at least one pub in town has a resident poltergeist who rearranges the optics for fun. This tour is not suitable for very young children – we recommend it for teenagers and adults who can handle a bit of nightmare fuel. It’s the same darkly funny style you’d expect from us, only with extra goosebumps. Check our tours page for availability.

Group Bookings for Schools, Corporates, and Private Parties

We know that the best way to experience Brighton’s history is with a group of friends, classmates, or colleagues. That’s why we offer group bookings for school trips, language school visits, and corporate team‑building events. Our guides are used to handling everything from excitable year 9s to cynical office workers who’d rather be at the pub.

We tailor the tour to your group’s interests – more history, more ghosts, or more ridiculous anecdotes. If you’re planning a private event, like a birthday party or a stag or hen do that doesn’t involve a hangover, we can arrange a dedicated tour just for your party. Simply drop us an email at [email protected] or give us a call on 07815186068. We’ll sort out dates, times, and any special requests – and we promise not to make any jokes about your team’s embarrassing moments.
